Alkavex, the steel trading business majority-owned by Alkagesta, has carried out a series of commercial visits in the Chinese cities of Tangshan and Tianjin to develop its sourcing and trading relationships. According to an account published by Alkagesta, the programme brought the business into contact with steel producers, traders, processors and industry representatives as part of its continuing commercial development activities in China.

Bayram Bayramli, Alkagesta’s China Business Developer, led the engagements. The company said the meetings offered a closer view of manufacturers’ production capabilities, the infrastructure supporting steel supply chains and opportunities for international trade. The programme covered both manufacturing and processing businesses, alongside industry associations, giving Alkavex contact with several parts of the regional steel sector rather than producers alone.

Alkagesta described Tangshan and Tianjin as a major Chinese corridor for steel production and exports. It said the visits reinforced relationships that support Alkavex’s purchasing and trading operations in the region. The account presented the engagements as business development work; it did not identify the companies visited or disclose any supply contracts, transaction values or steel volumes resulting from the meetings.

Based in Malta, Alkavex is a joint venture between Alkagesta and French steel trader Navex SAS, with Alkagesta holding the controlling interest. Its initial commercial focus is on semi-finished and finished steel, sourced mainly from China. That sourcing model places the Chinese market at the centre of the venture’s stated approach to supplying customers in West and East Africa.

The venture combines trading expertise with logistics and trade finance services, according to Alkagesta. Its African customer focus spans demand linked to construction, manufacturing and infrastructure development. The Chinese visits therefore relate to the supply side of a business designed to connect predominantly Chinese steel sourcing with those regional markets.
